No bovine TB vaccine for ten years

The European Commission has told Defra that a cattle vaccine for bovine TB (bTB) is unlikely to be commercially available until 2023.

Gordon McGlone‘s insight:

A bTB cattle vaccine has been field tested by AHVLA in cattle in Mexico and Ethiopia.  A DIVA test (a test to Differentiate Infected from Vaccinated Animals) is at the independent validation stage.

The EU considers that the existing products give ‘suboptimal protection’.  Compared to the deeply flawed badger cull strategy being pursued by DEFRA a bTB vaccine is key to managing and defeating bovine TB.  More political and farming industry energy is needed to bring these products to market.
